WTFVOTD - Kirsten Dunst - Turning Japanese

That's right. I said Kirsten Dunst. And she really is singing. Not only singing, but singing a thinly veiled song about masturbation. Now get this. The video is directed by McG. And this isn't something from the vault... this a post Terminator Salvation project. Why is this happening you may ask? Is Mary Jane putting out an album in hopes of being as successful and well loved as Zooey, or even as forgettable as ScarJo? Nope. It's a piece of art. Takashi Murakami who is like Japan's Andy Warhol is putting on an art show at the Tate Modern Museum in London, and this video my friends is the centerpiece.

McG + Kirsten Dunst + anime cosplay + random japanese = Fine Art. Who'd have thunk it.

Warning quick flash of a poster of anime boobs at 0:25... Otherwise relatively SFW

Covers friday + 1 non cover - Don Draper approved

Sometimes you hear songs on Mad Men that you haven't ever heard before... sometimes you hear songs that just make you happy to hear again. If you haven't seen this show, you really should (assuming it comes back for another season... I heard there were contract disputes) ... but go on watch the past 3 seasons.. you have till fall.

Season 1- Episode 13

Dont' think twice it's alright was the closing song to season 1. Originally by Dylan, this version is by Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music, who likes Dylan so much he actually did an album of all Dylan songs called Dylanesque... this song was not on that album though... It was off his album Frantic

Listen: Bryan Ferry, "Don't think twice, I'm Alright"

Bryan Ferry - Don't think Twice I'm alright

Season 2 - Episode 2

This is significant because it is one of the few times that Don Draper turns down some strange. I mean the man gets around. The japanese vesion of Sukiyaki by Kyu Sakamoto is playing in the background as Don is sitting in a Japanese restaurant, and the waitress subtly offers to hook op with him later to which he replies "Not tonight". You know this song. it's been sampled a billion times. I give you two covers... one by the immortal Selena, and the other by the beach boyesque band Big Baddy.

Listen: Selena, "Sukiyaki"

Selena - Sukiyaki

Listen: Big Daddy , "Sukiyaki"

Big Daddy - Sukiyaki

Season 3 - Episode 12

This is the episode about the Kennedy assassination. End of the World by Skeeter Davis plays during the end credits and its brilliantly haunting. Girls covered the song. wanna hear it... hear it goes.

Listen: Girls, "End of the World"

Girls - End of the World

Season 3 - Episode 13

This is the song that ended the season. Shahdaroba by Roy Orbison. I give you the original, cause I couldn't find anybody that covered it... which is a shame cause its a bad ass song and needs to be revived. If its any consolation to those cover purists out there, Roy didn't write it... the song was written by texas' own Cindy Walker, one of the most prolific country music songwriters of all time.

Listen: Roy Orbison, "Shahdaroba"

Roy Orbison - Shahdaroba

Martha & the Muffins are tops

mmmm muffin tops.... Since Boon has decided to cross the hudson with his picks lately, I'm going to shell out a Canadian band today to honor their trouncing of Alex Ovechkin(aka comrade douchebag and his russkies). Not only a canadian band, but a band that was formed in 1977. A band that had an international hit in 1980. Then did absolutely nothing of consequence for 30 freakin' years. Personally I think they were just waiting for the new wave revivial so they'd be back in style. That band is Martha and the Muffins.

I'm not even sure what to say about the first song from their new album Delicate. It is all over the place, and sometimes I think I really like it, and then sometimes I think it belongs more in the 90s in the Poe Hello days... Actually to be honest it reminds me of the I know what you did last summer soundtrack because of the Kula Shaker cover of Billy Joe Royal's "Hush", which was actually big in the late 70s. I'm so confused... I think its cause I listened to passion pit right after. eh you decide. what a "mess".

Listen: Martha And the Muffins, "Mess"

Martha and the Muffins - Mess

Would you maul and maim... if you were Bear in Heaven

On today's edition of Boon pick Wednesday, or "you got booned" as we like to call it here at WTF, we have Bear in Heaven, a band out of brooklyn. Although they are tagged as Experimental Rock, I'd almost categorize them as indie electro lounge. They've got those smooth sounds perfect for kicking back, smoking a cuban (or perhaps something medicinal if that's what you like to do) , and drinkin' some scotch. Actually it reminds me ALOT of My Morning Jacket and their Evil Urges Album, which is never a bad thing. In one word. Groovy.

The latest album is called Beast Rest Forth Mouth.

Listen: Bear in Heaven, "You Do You"

Bear in Heaven - You DO you

VOTD - Nirgaga

DJ lobsterdust did this little mashup of Smells like Teen Spirit vs Pokerface... I guess you can say it smells like illegal art because EMI playing their infringement card and they apparently weren't bluffing since he got a cease and desist. but hopefully the video will be around for a bit.

Stardeath and White Dwarfs : These boys from oklahoma roll their joints all wrong

There isn't much to say about this really... the album cover says it all... 2 freaky bands from Norman (Stardeath and White Dwarfs/Flaming Lips) featuring equally freaky guest stars (Henry Rollins and Peaches) doing a cover of a freaky album (Dark Side of the Moon).

Personally I like listening to this while watching Linda Carter as Wonder Woman running with her wonder boobs in full bounce. here have a try. I think you need to start it after the third boob bounce.

Listen: Stardeath and White Dwarfs, "Time /Breathe (Reprise)"

Stardeath and White Dwarfs - Time/Breathe (Reprise)

Dan Deacon

Dan Deacon is a happy bearded man. At least that's how I see him. Personally I think beards in general make you a more amicable, dare I say jolly fellow. but perhaps that just me and my beard talking. Regardless, when it comes to indie music, beards are generally a good indicator of good music, probably because lack of shaving and slovenly ways are usually indicative of a true artist. or a lazy software guy. or a homeless person.

Dan Deacon isn't homeless... he hails from Babylon, NY. critics love him. Pitchfork perennially hails his greatness (read: sucks his ****). Not tot say that he isn't good... I'm posting him aren't I... I personally really like the latest album Bromst, but only in spurts... turbo charged electronica will drive you mad if you listen to it straight through, unless perhaps if you are sucking on a pacifier waving glows ticks. Then you could probably handle it.

Listen: Dan Deacon, "Woof Woof"

Dan Deacon - Woof Woof

Oh, and here's a bad ass video, also from the Bromst album

Covers Friday - 80s S&M edition

Ah the 80's.... when the soviet union was our only enemy, the US won gold in Hockey, and if you busted out some killer breakdancing moves you were applauded and not laughed at. I don't care what you say... my robot is the bomb. Anyways, I picked 4 random 80s covers, and then realized that the song titles could be construed to insinuate some sort of need for some experimental sexual act, especially if your mind is int he gutter. Then I added Heart of Glass and screwed the theme all together.... or did I? I found this essay (site NSFW)

...and then I realized fantasies about NPR are probably the most deviant sexual fantasies ever. So here's to Ira Glass...

Listen: Old School Freight Train, "Heart of Glass (Blondie)"

Old School Freight Train - Heart of Glass

Girls do want to have fun. nasty freaky fun.

Listen: Starfucker, "Girls Just Want to have fun (Cyndi Lauper)"

Starfucker - Girls Just want to have fun

Christian Troy in Nip/Tuck was looking for that new sensation... it was autoerotic asphyxiation... wait didn't Michael Hutchence of INXS actually Die of that? I think its disturbing that I automatically associated that with this song/

Listen: Snow Patrol, "New Sensation(INXS)"

Snow Patrol - New Sensation

Just drip the candle wax on my chest... just like honey

Listen: Headless Heroes, "Just like Honey (Jesus & Mary Chain)"

Headless Heroes - Just like Honey

...and Master and Servant. jeesh how obvious can you be. break out the ball gag and the leather chaps.

Listen: Nouvelle Vague, "Master And Servant (Depeche Mode)"

Nouvelle Vogue - Master and Servant

Strange Boys

All hail the sons of Bob. Not me Bob... I'm fairly certain I don't have any offspring. Not Bob Dylan, although some of the songs are reminicent of his electric blues-folk style. No, The Strange Boys are the offspring of Bob Sambol, owner of Bob's Steak and Chop house here in Dallas. That's right, even though they claim to be from Austin, they belonged to Dallas first.

I'll have to admit, it took me way too long to get the first album.... I slacked a little, but now I've got it... The Strange Boys and Girls Club is the name, and it's kinda awesome. easily in the top 50 of last year: Lo Fi sound with a tinge of blues, and 70's psych.... They've come along way since their Dallas days, and they are only getting better. Album #2 has dropped now, and its called Be Brave, and from what I've heard it sounds as promising as the first one.

But I digress. Less talk more rock.

Listen: Strange Boys, "Probation Blues"

Strange Boys - probation blues

Here's the title track from the new album

Listen: Strange Boys, "Be Brave"

Strange Boys - Be Brave

unless you'd rather watch the video...

Regrets: Dave Matthews

Boon sent me this hilarity. had to share.

V+MOTD - Happy Hollows

The SXSW 2010 schedule has been announced, and The Happy Hollows will make their triumphant return.... I love this band... I first talked about them Here, but since then they dropped a new album called Spells. I'm not gonna give it a formal review, but its pretty damn good... Rockin' at times, poppy at times, and in some places just damn weird with tributes to back to the future and palindromes.... you know what?!? Enough talk... here's a song AND A video.

There were a lot of songs to choose from, but I went with this one cause of the Billy Corrigan reference.

Listen: Happy Hollows, "Tambourine"

Happy Hollows - Tambourine

And here is their latest video... Death to Vivek Kemp

Harlem Shakes /ARMS Gone but still here

I'm crazy. there is no stopping me. Why you ask? Because I'm gonna post a band that's already broken up. You may ask why would I do such a thing... and my only answer is that I really like the song... a member of my top 100 of 2009 list. The band is Harlem Shakes formerly out of Brooklyn, Nueva York. Not to be confused with Harlem out of Austin, which is also on my best of list. The song is called Strictly Game off their final album Technicolor Health.

Listen: Harlem Shakes, "Strictly Game"

Harlem Shakes - Strictly Game

But, I would not offer you what was without offering you what is yet to come. Lead Vocalist Todd Goldstein is moving forward with his former side/now full time project ARMS. And this could be promising. This is off the first ARM's record, Kids Aflame.

Listen: ARMS, "Eyeball"

Arms - Eyeball

VOTD - Enfant Terrible

Another Sonny J creation. Again poppy, yet mesmerizing.

Sonny J 'Enfant Terrible' from Sam Goldie on Vimeo.

Chew Lips ... no that's not what they call me after dipping too much

Chew Lips is a dance pop trio based out of london... in the vain of like florence and the machine and such. I like it. I'm sorry... I can't help it... I've got a soft spot for good pop. This slick little ditty is aptly called "slick" and it's off the album Unicorn

Listen: Chew Lips, "Slick"

Chew Lips - Slick

Covers Friday - Valentines Day and it finally stopped snowing edition

Seriously... we should not get this much snow in Texas. maybe in the panhandle, but not in Dallas.
But it looks like we will have Blue Skys for all star weekend and Valentines. So a couple of covers in honor of that.

Listen: Lily Allen, "Mr. Blue Sky(ELO)"

Lily Allen Mr. Blue Sky(ELO)

WTFVOTD - Mad Man Want to Marry me

Temper Trap... band most likely to go mainstream

It's a snow day in dallas, so its a day to post some mellow-ish music.

The Temper Trap is a band out of Melbourne Australia... Now they are a tricky band. I like their album Conditions but it didn't really have a musical identity; Almost every track was a different style, some of which is very radio friendly. So much so that my gf and I would probably both enjoy this album for different reasons. Some of the songs could easily be on Scrubs or Greys.

I gave you a couple. let me know how you feel.

This is the song I heard first that made me want to hear more

Listen: Temper Trap, "Soldier On"

Temper Trap - Soldier On

and this one is the more mainstream one...

Listen: Temper Trap, "Sweet Disposition"

Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition

Because I'm Awesome!

Boon sent me a video to a movie trailer earlier that was freakin awesome... which reminds me of this band... The Dollyrots... a bubblegum punk outfit in the vain of The Donnas. I was relistening to the old album cause they just put out a new single, however neither the a or b side of the single is really post worthy. these two videos of theirs are... the first is "Because I'm Awesome" and the second is a cover of the song played in the roller girl scene of Boogie Nights....

Because I'm awesome

Brand new Key

If you are wondering what sparked it all... it was this trailer. Pure Awesomeness.
this is the extended trailer

Sleigh bells rock... are you listening

Boon pick Wednesday, and this week he reminded me about a band that I wanted to post late last year, but I went MIA so I never really got to it... It's a brooklyn dance pop duo called Sleigh Bells, and its really a marriage of hardcore and pop... Derek Miller used to be in the hardcore outfit Poision the Well. Vocalist Alexis Krauss used to be in a teen pop band. Now they make some seriously sweet music together.

Listen: Sleigh Bells, "Crown On the Ground"

Sleigh Bells - Crown on the Ground

Listen: Sleigh Bells, "Beach Girls"

Sleigh Bells - Beach Girls

Listen: Sleigh Bells, "Ring Ring"

Sleigh Bells - Ring Ring

...And we almost forgot you ever existed

So ...And you will know us by the trail of dead used to be a kickass band from the ATX, then they got signed by a major label and basically sucked for a little while, but now that they don't have a label anymore, they don't entirely suck. I know that sounds like classic indie music snob talk, but its the truth. I'm not gonna say their new album was fantastic, but it at least had a few good songs on it.

Listen: ...Trail of Dead, "Bells of Creation"

...And you will know us by the trail of dead - Bells of Creation

Memory Tapes

So when I think of a memory tape, I automatically think 80's... you know when you used to back up the info on your computer to a tape... sometimes even a cassette... It all seems weird now after the life and death of floppy disks and the rise of flash drive. Well Dayve Hawk must be nostalgic to those times, cause the Jersey Kid has called himself all these things... Weird Tapes, Memory Cassette, and finally Memory Tapes. It could be worse... I mean he is from Jersey... he could be calling himself the situation or something.

The Music is about as throwback as the name.... Totally 80's renaissance... it's like an amalgamation of Depeche Mode, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, and a little Placebo thrown in there for some spice. BTW if I were from Jersey perhaps I would call myself The Amalgamation.

So the Seek Magic album came out in Sept.... I say album btw cause you can't really get a CD anymore... well not easily... its far easier to get vinyl these days. Guy and I went to the Girls/Magic Kids/Smith Westerners concert at the HOB, and all they sold was vinyl. But I digress... this particular album....It's pretty damn good. The song "Bicycle" made my top 100 songs of the year... that I may share with you sometime.

Listen: Memory Tapes, "Bicycle"

Memory Tapes - Bicycle

Listen:Memory Tapes, "Green Knight"

Memory Tapes - Green Knight

WTFVOTD - Buma in me Zak

Heres the what the f**k music video of the day
Words cannot express its greatness.

Diamond Rings are shiny and new

this song makes me happy. it just came on my playlist so I decided I'd share. It's a band called Diamond Rings out of Canada... well it's really a guy... John O'Regan... who is also in the canadian indie band D'Urbervilles.

So anyways, The guy looks like he wants to be a cross between Boy George and Morrissey, but he has a nice happy voice... I can't place who he sounds like besides calling him a male Regina Spektor, but the song is upbeat, and sounds like something straight out of Rocky Horror.

Yeah, I don't know if I painted a good picture or not so just listen. BTW, right now they only have a 7"inch out, but sometime this year they are gonna release another one.

Listen: Diamond Rings, "All Yr Songs"

Diamond Rings - All yr Songs

I'm back bitches

yeah I took a hiatus. I got lists for you, but they aren't really ready yet. we here at WTF haven't really been much of being sticklers to rules... so you might get lists all throughout the year. how's that for crazy. regardless look out for posts.
