VOTD - M.I.A - Born Free

You remember M.I.A. don't you... she was gonna retire from music altogether, start a clothing line... have a baby. Then Paper Planes blew up and so she kinda did a "Psyche! ... I'll be back after the baby" ... Well she's back, and with a freaking awesome video that would make Trey Parker and Matt Stone super happy. The Gingers... they must be stopped.... oh I'm guessing this is a little NSFW... I'm pretty sure I saw a boob for a split second and of course there is gratuitous violence.

Spooky Folk

It's a local Thursday type of day... so today we are gonna talk about Denton based Spooky Folk. The joke has been made plenty of time that their music is neither spooky nor folky, however it does kinda fit in the psyc-folk category. Take this song for example. "Polaroid" .. it starts out with a Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet/Cure/New Order-ish and then it pulls out a little country folk vibe. Its an addicting song although slightly schizophrenic... its kinda like they stuck a totally different song in the middle of their song. Not complaining though.. I like it. And extra points for rocking beards. Their self titled album should be out soon.

Clare and the Reasons

Clare and the Reasons burst on the NY indie pop scene in 2007 with the release of The Movie which had some guest appearances from old school Beach Boy producer Van Dyke Parks and Sufjan Stevens. Since then Clare married one of the reasons, and they have released a new album Arrow. The album isn't groundbreaking... although I like the use of orchestration and horns... its very St Vincent like and I love me some Annie Clark.... its just catchy pop goodness. And Clare's voice makes me feel all tingly inside. It's a lot like Nina Persson... and Nina still makes my knees quiver ever time I hear her.

Roommates.

Bring Back Cassettes! I like how everything old is new again.... First there was the resurgence of Vinyl... now with the popularity of Lo-fi, some people such as the Roommates are releasing cassette singles again. and I'm intrigued. But before we get into the actual cassette... lets talk about the band... Roommates is a side project of Ben Cook aka Young Governor aka Lil Bitey, who is a guitarist for Fucked Up and his roommate Mark Fosco who also played with Cook in another band... Marvelous Darlings.

So now that the roommates are actually The Roommates, they decide to record a 4 part series of cassettes that they will release on Scotch Tapes, perhaps one of the most awesome label names ever (although Secretly Canadian is still the best). The first of which is called Wi. I would say buy it, but it's already sold out... they only made 99 copies. But a new one is on the horizon, so be on the lookout for that.

The songs on Wi are "Back to the Sun / Girlfriend Swap". Its lo-fi power pop at its best... very ramones-ish but with 80s pop tendencies. I especially like Girlfriend swap because the lyrics are hilariously creepy. BTW doing an google image search on "Roommates Girlfriend Swap"... totally NSFW... in the end I couldn't find any pics of Mark and Young Governor together... so I just gave you the guv.

Friday Ramblings: a cover and Local Natives and the Pretty Reckless

So first off, let me say that I could have SWORN I posted Local Natives before... I loved "Sun Hands" and I know I thought about posting it whenever I finally got Gorilla Manor. However I didn't apparently because I can find no evidence of the song anywhere on my site. Huge oversight on my part. I will correct this mistake. The LA band played the Sons of Herman Hall last night, and it was a killer show. The guys sounded great. And I love that the guitar player has the whole John Oates look going. Nice Stache sir. And the lead singer kinda looks like Charlie from Always Sunny. But that's neither here or there... they rocked the sold out show and I was shocked by the cult following they have. I'm calling it now. they will play ACL. They will play the Heineken stage. Bob Has spoken.

Ok so from Gorilla Manor you get this:

Listen:Local Natives "Sun hands"

Local Natives - Sun Hands

But it's friday right? so I should post a cover... specifically a killer talking heads cover.

Listen:Local Natives "Warning Sign"

Local Natives - Warning Sign

And just for good measure another cover by the Mates of State. Apparently they are gonna have a new mixtape out this summer called Crushes and its all covers. This one in particular is "Laura", originally by Girls.

Listen:Mates of State "Laura (Girls Cover)"

Mates of States - Laura (Girls Cover)

Speaking of Crushes and Girls... what about Gossip Girls? So 16 yr old Taylor Momsen has a band called The Pretty Reckless. Scary huh? Scarier is thatt it actually does not completely suck. Her voice has a bit of a growl to it, and the vibe has got the classic angry young woman influences... Joan Jett, Hole with a little bit of The Donnas and Brody Dalle (Spinnerettes) and a tad bit of Poe thrown in. Hey but what do you expect when the 90s Grunge scene was basically classic rock for this girl. The debut album drops in September, however there is a song on the Kick Ass soundtrack... although based on the lyrics to "Make Me Wanna Die" it sounds like it was probably written for The Twilight series... very vampire-esque. Personally I like "Blender" better. I'm officially intrigued.

Listen:Pretty Reckless "Blender"

Pretty Reckless - Blender

Listen:Pretty Reckless "Make Me Wanna Die"

Pretty Reckless - Make Me Wanna Die

And speaking of movies... did you hear that they are making a sequel to Avatar? Apparently the sequel will take place in the Oceans of Pandora. Really James Cameron? First you borrow Dances with Wolves and now you are gonna dabble in Waterworld? Leave poor Kevin Costner alone.

The Pack A.D.

The Vancouver duo Pack A.D. has a new album coming out next week called We Kill Computers... I love the sound of this band... not quite as Jack Whitey as the Dead Weather and not quite the same as the Black Keys but a nice mix of the two... perhaps they are their estranged cousins that show up on the sitcom when the ratings start to dip to get new viewers... not that Jack white or the Black Keys are experiencing a ratings dropoff... I think they are at the height of their stardom. Whatever the case... Becky Black Wails. I loved their last outing. "All Damn day Long" made my top 13 songs of 2008. I'm excited for more.

Minus the Bear

Today You got Booned will feature the first single from the fourth Minus the Bear album, Omni... named after guitar player Dave Krudson's new toy... a Japanese Omnichord synthesizer straight from 1981. It seems that the band decided to get a little more experimental in their ways on the new album... especially the first track which is "My Time" .. however they didn't abandon their old style completely... there are still plenty of fabulous guitar riffs and all sorts of random sound effects going on, but on a whole I think the album is a lot less out there than the other albums. much more poppy and far more groovy. My favorite track would have to be "Into the Mirror" I think... its got more groove than anything else in the album... Its weird though.. listening to some of the tracks on the album makes me feel like I'm listening to 80s pop...

So here is "My Time" and couple of Bonus videos... A song that did not make the new album unfortunately... chicken (wrapped in bacon) AND a video for "Throwin' Shapes" that we saw a few times at the Granada while waiting for Yeasayer and Javelin... and its sillier than the thought of the Cowboys going 8-8 next year....

Double post - Lovely Eggs /Schaffer the Dark Lord

I'm gonna do a double post today...cause I was gone for Thursday and Friday of last week... AND... these two songs actually make a Back to the Future reference. which I find somewhat odd and intriguing... first off... Lovely Eggs. I'm not gonna lie... I could listen to the song "Have you ever heard a digital Accordian" over and over again... it reminds me of something that could be on Saturday morning cartoons back in the day... well at least most of the song. The Lancaster UK married couple offers that same kind of vibe in pretty much everything I've heard... most of it has a kind of Moldy Peaches meets the Breeders knda feel, but every once in a while there is a noisy little bit just to remind you that they've got a lil punk in them... in fact I think i'd classify their music as garage nerdpop-punk. here's the song, and the video to the song just cause it's silly.

listen: Lovely Eggs "Have you ever seen a digital Accordian"

Lovely Eggs - Have you Ever Seen a Digital Accordian

And speaking of nerds... I heard this nerdcore rapper and I just had to post... His name is Schaffer the Darklord, or STD for short. Based in New York now, STD used to be a heavy metal drummer in San Fran (I sh*t you not) but now focuses on some pop culture heavy rhymes. Again I provide a video and a song, but this time they are different. yeah I'm freakin' sneaky like that.

The Witch and the Robot

I love this band name... The Witch and the Robot. Sounds like some effed up fairy tale... I mean everyone knows that monkeys are the mortal enemies of the robots.. and who controls the flying monkeys? That's right... the Wicked Witch of the West... so when the Giant robots come to Oz lead by Dorothy in her robot avatar suit, the witch does not yield to her new robot overlords... she fights back. Yes I know... it sounds weird.. but imagine that story as like music... that's what these guys sound like... Hailing from Cumbria just like British Sea Power, these guys are letting there freak folk flag fly. This track is from their new album On Safari... have a listen

Joanna Newsom

Today on You Got Booned we have a girl that everyone involved with WTF love. Perhaps itsthe Harp. Perhaps its the quirkiness of the lyrics. Perhaps its her hypnotizing little girl voice. Or maybe its the fact that she resembles a sexy Gelfling. Regardless Everyone Loves Joanna Newsom. Ok not everybody... in fact you either love her or you hate her. And sometimes your roomates want to kill you for playing the album while they are trying to sleep. You either get it or you don't I guess.

Here's a two off the new album Have One On Me... which is actually like 2 hours full of music on 3 albums. Anyways... one is my choice and one is Boon's. They both happen to be track 4. Weird. I wonder what the significance is? I wonder if its because I'm going to be saying "Fore" alot while Golfing this weekend. I wonder if I'll have Good Intentions but end up killing a Jackrabbit.

The Law

The Law. Now here's a bunch of Scottish blokes from Dundee that put out an album last year called A Measure of Wealth and I like the sound... It's got a bit of a Kaiser Chiefs meets the Bravery thing going on... which doesn't quite make them mainstream, but it does make them Josh Scwartz -like show worthy... perhaps even movie soundtrack worthy. I like this song, I'm not gonna lie, but I do have some issue with their name. You see, they say that the name is a combination of two things. First they are named after a dormant volcano in their hometown... and thats cool... I would have totally left it at that. But then they go and say that number two is a because of their love of Joe Strummer and the Clash and their song "I fought the Law". Now there is nothing wrong with liking the clash... I can definitely see the influence of London Calling on this album. That is a good thing. HOWEVER... the clash didn't write I fought the Law... that belongs to the Crickets... or at least Bobby Fuller... That is a Texas song sirs and should be given credit.

That is all.

Skygreen Leopards

This duo is from where the bears roam free... San Francisco. Chill kinda folkish stuff that reminds me fondly of Tom Petty... int the It's good to be king days. Nothing exciting or groundbreaking really, but its a nice little song to have in your barbecue mixes... and yes you will have to invite me to said bbq so I can approve of the super awesome music mix you have. I won't take all the credit. Unless there is Nickelback on it... then I won't take any credit at all. In fact, I will be curled up in a ball eating my short ribs basted with my own tears, because I have failed you as a musical mentor.

VOTD - Yeasayer - One

I've got a weird evening ahead of me. Headed to the Yeasayer concert at the Granada tonight, then going to have a conference call with guys in Singapore. Here's a pretty cool video for "One".

Band of Horses

Today's edition of You got Booned is going to feature an old favorite... Seattle's Band of Horses. After 2 records that may have not gotten any air play on terrestrial radio yet somehow managed to find an audience by being in every car commercial ever made and every Josh Schwartz created TV show. OK so Maybe that's a bit of an embellishment, but they were seriously on the verge of getting over-exposed before they could even be stars. Still, we love them. Now they're all growns up... For their third album they've moved on from Sub Pop and actually signed to 3 different labels... Fat Possum and Brown to keep their indie cred, and Columbia so they can play with the big boys if it really takes off. Haven't heard much off the new album, Infinite Arms due out in May, but the first single "Compliments" is an upbeat little ditty and a little bit of a departure from the other albums.

BTW, whats up with all the courtesy from bands lately.. We got Congratulations from MGMT, and Compliments from Band of Horses. Somebody needs a song that says "you go to hell... you go to hell and you die" just to even out the karma.

(song removed)

And here's the video for good measure.

David Byrne & Fatboy Slim

These two men need no introduction... the Talking Head and Norman Cook are pretty much icons and both are musical geniuses in their own right . And when they get together its a bit magical. The last time, it was on the BPA album, and it produced "Toe Jam" which was an insanely catchy little Ditty. Now they have re-united to create the electronic opera that is Here Lies Love. Eat your heart out Evita. This concept album's inspiration is Imelda Marcos. You remember her right? The first lady of the Philippines that was obsessed with Shoes who was exiled and later stood trial for misappropriation of government funds and racketeering and fraud. The album is pretty ambitious little project... two discs and 22 songs sung from the point of view of Imelda and her servant Estrella Cumpas. But its well written, and although the storyline isn't entirely obvious, its a great listen. Oh did I mention the bevy of guest vocalists? All but one track has a guest vocalist singing it... A whole Bunch of awesome chick singers... Florence Welsh from Florence and the machine, Tori Amos, Martha Wainright, Cyndi Lauper, Sharon Jones, Sia, Nicole Atkins ... The only other guy besides Byrne to sing is Steve Earle, but he rocks his song.

Here's a couple of tracks. The first is a song that has what I like to call the Tom Hicks connection... With Dallas's own St. Vincent and Liverpool's Candie Payne offering the guest Vocals. The second is the official first single by Santogold.

Go out and buy the album.. the double deluxe edition... you get a DVD of videos from the album, and a 100 page book.

San Saba county

Austin, Texas natives San Saba County like to call them self post.alt.country. I'm gonna have to agree. I keep listening to this song over and over again, and I can't help but think of Son Volt meets the Old 97s.. I can even hear twinges of Jay Farrar in Saba's voice. Unfortunately for everyone, the No Depression era has came and went paving away for the Indie Folk Explosion that we have now. It's really sad though... The country roots are gone or at least Fading. The Texas Music scene just hasn't been the same since 2004.... I think around the time Pat Green sold out and went to Nashville. Red Dirt tried to pick up the slack but now its just a bunch of pretty boys trying to get a Nashville contractas well. I think in Texas, Indie is the new Outlaw. It is far better to sound more like Wilco than Jack Ingram. Some of the greatest songwriters ever have come from Texas. Lets hope that always stays that way.

VOTDs - Matt and Kim - Lessons Learned/Jamaica - I think I Like U2

So apparently people here in Dallas are outraged at Erykah Badu for her guerrilla video where she not only stripped down naked in the streets of Dallas, but she did it with unsuspecting passer-bys including little kids watching. Oh and then she simulates getting shot right around where JFK was shot. Some people are up in arms about her desecrating a "sacred" place. some people just say she should have been arrested for indecent exposure. Some people are even actually playing the race card, saying that if she was white she would have gone to jail. You can watch the video here if you want to see what the fuss is about. I personally think is pretty cool. And if you look around at all the unsuspecting people in the video, no one seems to be appalled. or seems to care. Especially the kids. Which blows my mind, cause if I were a kid I'd totally be checking that out. BTW, when asked about the children, Badu said that she tried to "telepathically communicate" her intent to them so they would not be scarred for life.... Maybe it worked?

Oh, so at the beginning of the video, it says "inspired by Matt and Kim". So Ladies and Gentlemen, I decided to post the video that inspired the controversy. I like this one better than Erykah's video, but I think its cause I like the song better.

As an extra unrelated bonus, here is a really cool video for a good song by Jamaica. Formerly called Poney Poney. They are from France, and I don't think they would care if people were walking naked down the street. They would probably be all "Le sigh... another naked boody"

Mount Righteous

It's strange that I happen to be working on a Food Mix... you know... to decide what to have for lunch... you just hit random and go to where the song suggests. Well I came across the song "Eat your wife and Kiss the Barbecue" from the DFW and Grapevine's own Mount Righteous. These guys are a huge ensemble band much like other locals the Polyphonic Spree... and they are pretty quirky as far as songs go. Mt Righteous is however a far less like a cult than the spree. Yet that doesn't really make them much weirder. They can be considered more a weird folk punk marching band with a really angry percussion section. The New Self titled album drops on Tuesday (Apr 3) . here's a song and a video.

Listen: Mount Righteous "Eat your Wife and Kiss the Barbecue"

And the Video for Suburban Homesick Blues... The song and the video a bit of an Homage to Bob Dylan
