So a couple of years ago, this Brooklyn band called Dirty Projectors caught my ear because they had decided to do a cover album. But not just any cover album.. a re-imagining of the Black Flag classic Damaged... the deal is they did it without listening to the album in 15 years... purely from memory. I was impressed. Well now, not only do we have a new Dirty Projectors album coming out in June called Bitte Orca, but as an extra added bonus we have Mind Raft... the new EP from Angel Deradoorian... one of the vocalists for the band. Good times. Doesn't Deradoorian have a little Natalie Portman meets Gina Gershon look to her?
Regardless. I can't really compare the music to anything, but I do have to say that the new singles for both the solo outing have a good chance of catching on.
Papercuts out of San Francisco is the name for the one man band that is Jason Quever with help from the likes of Alex Scally from Beach House and members of The Parish. Their sophomore album You Can Have What You Want was released on April 14... It's got a mix of the etherial hazy sound much like Beach House or Fleet Foxes mixed with the 60s groove of The Zombies.
So we were arguing exactly what makes a chick flick. I of course chose the stance that all teen movies are by definition not chick flicks, because their target audiences are teens. So who better to showcase today, than the master of the teen movie... Mr John Hughes.

hello, and welcome to another installment of local thursday, where we here at WTF like to showcase some talent, born in Stephenville, and now calling Denton\Ft Worth home... Mara lee Miller, otherwise known as Bosque Brown. Although she's really a solo act, her band alter ego borders between indie folk and alt. country. They have a very Jolie Holland-esque sound if we are gonna make comparsions. And... they have a new album called Baby out. go buy it.
Straight out of Los Angeles, California and led by an ex-child actor, Whispertown 2000 has that indie folk sound just sort of country that might seem out of place for LA, but when you find out that Morgan Nagler the lead vocalist and songwriter is buddy buddy with fellow ex child actors turned musicians, Blake Sennett and Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley, you can definitely see that they were all influenced by a common thread. and quite frankly its refreshing...even if she does like to sing off key every once in a while... she reminds me of a cross between Lucinda Williams and Zooey Deschanel with a touch of Cat Power. The backing vocals are nothing to be balked at either... Vanesa Corbala provides a nice dreaminess... and BTW, Jenny Lewis also appears on the latest album Swim along with Gillian Welch to provide backing vocals on "Atlantis" and perhaps some other tracks. Today I bring you "Done With Love" its just all around goodness.
I heard this song twice today, so I figured it was an omen that I must post much like its an omen that the Cowboy practice facilities collapsed... see now they don't have to worry about the team collapsing in December... but I digress... this post isn't about cowboys but it is about boots... this is about Little Boots... She's a electro pop princess from the UK who came on the scene last year with the very catchy hook of Stuck on Repeat... well her next single is New in Town, and its super catchy and its getting much remix love. Btw, I know Remix monday is not officially a day but dammit, each one of these has got its own little flavor. here's a taste.

So I went to the cake concert last night... it was amazing... AND they gave away a persimmon tree. It would make sense if you were there. Regardless CAKE from Sacramento California are no strangers to covers... They've covered Gloria Gaynor, Keith Whitley, Frank Sinatra, The Muppet, Kenny Rogers... you name it.. .they've done it, and most of the time done it better.
