Foster the People

Ok kids, just in time for Memorial day weekend, here's a song that MUST make your summer/lake playlist because quite frankly by the end of the summer everybody will be listening to it. and you can just laugh in their face like the music snob you apire to be and pretty much say "yeah, but I heard it first". The band is called Foster the People. Now, remember when Peter, Bjorn, and John came out with "Young Folks" and we instantly fell in love with it... even when it became mainstream and was virtually everywhere? This song envokes that moment from me. Remember when you first heard the MGMT album? That was good times, right. Do you feel like they should have stuck with the same formula as the first record instead of going more experimental? Well from what I've heard of FTP, the new album should quench your thirst.

It's a bit amazing really. That the band shows so much promise that is. The band just formed in August of last year in LA. They haven't even put out an album yet... not even an EP to my knowledge. Hell, they barely played their first gig in January but still managed to win over a lot of peeps at SXSW... including I'm guessing Sony who I speculate picked the band up (since they are no longer streaming all their tracks on their website). The bands recipe... PB&J + MGMT with a dash of Phoenix, and a smidgeon of CWK all broiled in a Postal Service broth .... Now doesn't that just scream indie turned commercial success? Yes, perhaps I've over-hyped the song and it may just fall into the dismal abyss of the blogosphere never to be seen again, but I'm sure as hell gonna jam to it.

(drumroll)
so without further adieu... your new WTF approved summer anthem.... "Pumped up Kicks"

The National

Today on You got Booned, we have the National, who earlier this month released their fifth album to date, High Violet. If you don't know the National, they have a bit of reputation for being a bit gloomy. Defintiely a Morrisey-ish type of Shoegaze... or a piano centric, less industrial version of Joy Division. And honestly who could blame them for the melancholy... They live in freakin' Ohio. And who wants to live in Ohio. I mean, once Lebron leaves, it pretty much has got nothin.

Anyways, they set out to make the new album a bit happier than the rest, but that didn't happen. It may be a little bit more upbeat than the last albums, but it is definitely not happier. High Violet doesn't really stray too far from their normal formula. Well written lyrics with characters that seem like everyday people with everyday problems yet are just a little more effed up... check. Matt Berringer crooning Sad bastard vocals that could invoke wrist slitting if not for the slightly arousing Barry Whitish factor... check. Piano/drum driven melodies that stick in your head and pull it all together... check. From Start to finish, this might not be their best album, but the best songs on the album may be better than the best from previous outings... and when you are talking about songs like "Karen", "Fake Empire", and "Slow Show"... that's a bold statement. If I had a choice I'd post every track except the first two of the album.... its too hard to decide.

And I love Conversation 16.... How can you not love a cannibal love song. I usually got a two song limit per album tho, so I'll have to bump "Afraid of Everyone" to video status even though it is a bad ass song as well.

Jookabox

It sounds like a movie character with a bad italian accent trying to say Jukebox, but in reality Jookabox is a mighty fine band from Indianapolis. Originally called Grampall Jukabox, it was a solo effort by David "Moose" Adamson. BTW I really don' t know what you can do to earn yourself a nickname called Moose. He's got a beard now and all, but he doesn't seem all that moosey. Remember You can't do that on Television. The girl host on that was named Moose, and I never knew why. Oh well, so where was I... he recorded the first two albums on his own, then collaborated with his drummer on the breakout album Dead Zone Boys. Now they have a permanent 4 piece band, and a new album coming out called Membranes so they are keeping busy and will probably be on more peep's radar. It's a really weird random sound... apparently they've been labeled "Ghost punk" and if I had any clue what that means, I would probably argue with it but oh well. Here's something old (Evil Guh) and something new (Eyes of the Fly Demo).

Generationals

Here's another song for your summer happy time playlist, and its from Nawlin's based Generationals. It's a fitting name... their album Con Law doesn't really have just one sound... it's like its just indie pop that spans generations... One minute you think you are listening to something out of the 70's Elton John catalog, the next you are listening to a Tom Pettyish song, then a little Paul Simon Action, then perhaps a something a little MGMTish, and then to top it all off you get some late 60ish Phil Spector girl band pop... Complete with the domestic violence undertones. It's quite the aural experience. But the common thing... its very happy music. Perfect for grillin or sitting by the pool. or since they are from the big easy, perhaps a crawfish boil...

The below video doesn't have Tess so I guess I'll give a little background on the band. The Band started when the band Eames Era fell apart after five years. Band members Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer decided they still had music to offer the world, and went back to New Orleans and recorded the bunch of songs that they had written, which became the album. Like MGMT they started out as a twosome, but decided they needed more. They met Tess Bruneh from Au Ras Au Ras in 2009, and she became their drummer. And quite frankly having a girl drummer gives the boys far more cred in my book. Hell now when they perform live, they can have as much as seven members... including backup singers, trumpet players, and probably more cowbell. They just finished up their spring tour with Apples in Stereo, so I expect some more stuff soon. for now have a listen to what I've got...

Covers Friday - VOTD edition

Oh yeah Covers Friday is back with a vengeance... I think I'm gonna actually go the entire video route too. Mostly because I'm busy and quite honestly lazy.

Lets Start of with Lucinda Belle covering Lady Gaga... Ms Belle is a Radio 2 Darling that just signed on with Capital, so I'm sure they will be hunting down my posts of her before too long. Until then, its a live version of Telephone

Seriously I post a lot of MGMT covers... especially of this song. but I think this version is my favorite thusfar.

and this is probably the most "special" cover of Bon Jovi. It is unique.

Speaking of Metal... Dio died. isn't that sad. I'm sure he's now sitting at the right hand of satan. I know this isn't a Dio-sabbath cover, but I'm still posting. I'm sorry I didn't like Dio when he wasw in Sabbath.

Although I was a bit of a fan of Dio solo work. or was it Rainbow. It all runs together. here's a cover of Holy Diver....

And on the lighter side of things, a little Pixie lott

Surfer Blood

While everyone at the University of Florida was concerned with Tim Tebow; his heisman run, his virginity, his stupid little eye messages and not to mention national championships and such, West Palm Beach based Surfer Blood was busy recording their debut album Astro Coast in their off campus apartment down in Boca Raton. They probably didn't even like Tim Tebow. Hell, they probably didn't even like football. They definitely didn't like the surfer kids who used to torment them in their youth. Perhaps thats why the name arose... to call for the waters to run red with the surfer kids blood. No matter though, because its a far better name than Jabroni Sandwich. I shit you not... that's what they used to be called. And I can only imagine that the name was an homage to WWE superstar The Rock, back before he started dressing like the tooth fairy for Disney movies.

Now with a name like Surfer Blood, you will be led to think its a bit of surf revival rock, but that isn't really the case. Sure you can hear a bit of Beach Boys influence, especially with the heavier reverb vocals on some songs and some of the riffs, but if I had to describe their sound, I would probably consider them closer to a cross between Vampire Weekend and Weezer and the Cure (but only on the happy songs) with a touch of the Smiths and strangly enough a dash of Asia (or is it Toto... I get confused with them some time). So yeah, what I'm trying to say is that Tim Tebow blows goats and I hope he gets laughed off the field in Denver, if he ever makes it on the turf that is. Oh, and that Astro Coast is just happy goodness., and would be a perfect addition to your summer music rotation, you Jabronis. If you smell... what the Bob... is cooking.

Wolf Parade

Today on You Got Booned... Wolf Parade. Ah 2005. This was the awakening to the masses... when real people (as opposed to music snobs like me and boon) started caring about indie bands due to sudden popularity of the Garden State Soundtrack and bands such as Modest Mouse. Wolf Parade seemed to be just another Canadian buzzband, yet the keyboard/vocalist Spencer Krug already had quite the resume and list of cohorts. Being a part of Frog Eyes and Sunset Rubdown, and hanging out with the Arcade Fire gave the band the indie cred they needed to be praised by the emerging blog scene, yet they had the sound that was able to appeal to the new audience craving accessible indie music, thus with the release of Apologies to the Queen Mary, Wolf Parade became internet superstars. Flash forward to now... after a bit of a sophomore slump the third album Expo 86 due out on June 29th, and it has just as much buzz and expectations as the first album. Here's a taste

VOTD - Raveonettes - Heart of Stone

Here's a lil bonus Raveonettes action for ya.... Comingtoyaaaahaaaa !!!! yeah sorry bout that... but I dig this video. Now back to my hole to work....

Soft Pack

ACL lineup is out people! Doesn't that just make you excited! Well it does me. One of the bands heading up the div 1-AA bands is the Soft Pack... from a Whales Vagina... I mean San Diego... Damn you Ron Burgandy! So Much like MGMT, the band started as a two piece, then started to tour as a full band and opened for some kick ass bands.. The Breeders, Bloc Party, Black Keys... etc. Well they got a lot of buzz in 2008 at sxsw.. Course back then they were called the Muslims. A lot of people raised hell about the name however, which was really unfortunate cause they were gathering so much steam... but whatever. so now they are called the Soft Pack. They released their latest self titled album back in February, and it is pure retro garage rock goodness.

Fang Island

Sorry bout the late post. I was having some server issues again. I thought maybe "the man" shut me down again, but its all good. you know what else is good. Blizzards from Dairy Queen. and the fact that ACL lineups get announced tomorrow. its a very exciting day. I think I need a fist bump. or perhaps just an old school high five. Perhaps even a Goose and Maverick Special. You know who describes their music as "everyone high fiving everone"? That's right... it would be Rhode Island born and Brooklyn based band Fang Island. And I would not be surprised one bit if when the lineup is announced, they are on it. They released their self titled album this year. And seriously... they really kinda do sound like that. Its a weird mix of guitar rock and pop... like Sum41 meets Vampire Weekend.

Check it out.

CC Sheffield

Ok, I'm gonna do things all sorts of backwards today... first of all CC Sheffield isn't local, and furthermore, I'm going to post a cover... normally reserved for Friday. Why you say? I dunno. Because I can. You're not the boss of me. Who is this girl you ask? Yeah I don't really know. I think Cydney Celeste grew up in Arizona, but moved to LA to be a star. Gotta Few gigs doing bit parts in sitcoms and starring in music videos and then started a band called Le Rev and released an album called Tales of Running Away. Now she's gone solo. Still doing some Acting... in fact she actually had a role on True Blood my favorite vampire show. She's doing some Work with DJ Tiesto and getting to play Coachella and DJing the pre-chella festivities. Her new upcoming album is called Golden Grime and it should be out sometime this month.

I think I like her cause she has that Lily Allen/Peaches Naughty pop lyrics and attitude. I also Like that she has like her own logo. That's just ballsy. Nevertheless I'm posting a cover of "Lust for Life" By Girls, a little silly video she did, and the video of the song she did with DJ Tiesto. yeah its a bit poppy.

Interpol

Today on You got Booned, we have Interpol... the New York based re-incarnation of Joy Division. Ok maybe not the re-incarnation but they did sound a lot like them when they first started... in fact they were the first to have the post-punk post-goth sound.... it would be later emulated by She Wants Revenge and others, but Interpol did the whole retro thing first. And now they are seasoned veterans... signed to Capitol Records and getting to release their fourth album (where this song comes from). They are alls grown up. And sometimes grown ups need to go their separate ways. That's why Carlos D (bassist and keyboards) decided to call it quits after completing this album. He and his 'stache whill move on to bigger possibly better things.

Ancient Crux

Busy Busy Day today... only a little bit of time to talk to you about Ancient Crux ... a cali band that like a phoenix basically rose from the ashes of another band called Rapid Youth. Last year they released an EP called Interracial Coupling and it got a little buzz... enough for Half Machine to pick them up on their level. I like the sound.. Lo fi pop punk that could fit right in with the Sun Records crowd, or open up for an 80's Violent Femmes or a 9o's Weezer... back when Weezer was cool.

Via Tania

Via Tania is the performance name of Tania Bowers, a sydney born native who's kinda been hanging around the Windy City music scene for pretty much the past decade. However it was playing a show back in Australia when she bumped into the big ol' Texan Craig Ross, who swept her back to Austin to produce her second album of goodies called Moon Sweet Moon. And I'm glad this happened... what was created was a brilliant sound... a bit gloomy at times, a bit loungy, but always good. Here is my equation for this sound.

(a bit of Tom Waits Moodiness - Tom's Voice and lots of his genious ) + (MGMT with a little less synth) + (A dash of Poe) + (Cat Power Purr) + (a smidgeon of Bjork quirky sound)

Not to mention shes got a kinda St. Vincent meets Rachel Bilson meets Busy Phillips look to her. lil bit.

Yeah I'm too tired to post a real entr... worked all night and all... I just want to get away and relax... and that's what this song and this video make me do. Chill. I love this freaking band. I cannot get enough of their stuff. It's about time they put an album out and stop teasing with the singles and EPs.

White Denim

It's Cinco freakin De Mayo people. I'm posting early today, cause I'm drinking Margaritas at lunch....so on this very Mexican edition You Got Booned... we have White Denim. No this post isn't about Selena's pants... but damn weren't those some form fitting jeans... White Denim isn't even Mexican... athough the trio IS out of Austin TX, so that's close enough. Anyways, these guys has been on people's radar for a while (2005ish), especially the likes of Chris over at GVB... I'm fairly certain that's where I found out about them... and now on the wings of their third full length album Fits, they are getting a little bit more exposure to the masses... plus it doesn't hurt that they are supposed to put on an insane live show... which I still have yet to go to however... I think I take them for granted cause they are a local band and I think they'll be around forever. And why shouldn't I... they have a chameleon like sound that seems to fit in anywhere and nowhere... from rock to psych to good ol' fashioned soul... and funk... a whole lotta funk.

Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs

So back in 2001 I *cough* came across *cough* a demo of a song called "It's true that we love one another" with a girl I had never heard before sharing vocals with this up and coming new band called the White Stripes. The song would later be on the album Elephant. That british girl was miss Holly Golightly, and she totally intrigued me.... so I kept my eyes on her... and much like her duet partner, she evolved with the times... She found a new kindred quirky spirit to replace Jack and collaborate with in Lawyer Dave ( a one man drum and guitar extravaganza from good ol' San Antone) as she morphed from a garage rocker to more of a rockabilly and blues infused organic grassroots country sound.

Ok, I don't know if you can call Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs country. Every song on the new album Medicine Country is a little bit different... sometimes it has that country twang, but at others it has more of a bluesy feel, and sometimes its just outright what I call Spaghetti Western Lounge. Its good though. I like it.... Its hard to believe she's British these days... living in rural Georgia with a Texan, playing southern fried jams.

Medicine County is Holly's third album with the Brokeoffs... The first was You Can't Buy a Gun When You're Cryin'... which is just a fabulous name. The second gave us the Song "Getting High for Jesus" and it was called Dirt Don't Hurt.

Giant Drag

The on again/off again duo of Annie Hardy and Micah Calabrese have reunited and it feels so good. Giant Drag is officially back together and hopefully they will kick around for a little while. I don't know if plans are still in the works or not for another full length album, but they have managed to tease us a bit with an EP... called Swan Song. The sound of which can officially be called shoegaze... its definitely a nod to the 90s sound... which is a lil bit refreshing since everybody is retro discoing or doing the nu new wave thing. The title Track. "Swan Song", sounds a lot like the Sundays and Mazzy Star... just a little noisier of course. "Stuff to Live For" sounds like something and for the life of me I can't place it!!!! it makes me angry . Maybe you can figure it out...

VOTD - Black Keys - Next Girl

Frank the Funkasaurus Rex is back in the Black Keys latest unofficial (yet pretty much official) video. This one is for "Next Girl" . If you missed Frank's work, he was also the star of the video for "Tighten Up" and I'm assuming he's the unoffical yet pretty much official mascot of the new album Brothers.

Yes Frank is a puppet, and yes this video is more advertising than being video artistic. And yes there are comical words validating that this in an advertisment on the bottom if you can get past the bikini clad women. I gotta tell ya though, for being an ad man, Frank is awesome. I can see him getting his own spinoff show. Or at least be in a reality show where he can get drunk, rowdy and fight with all his little ad character roomates... The Capital One Viking, the Aflac Duck, the Travelocity Gnome, The Burger King King, and the Geico Gecko and Caveman and Voyeur Cash. It's Gold Jerry. Pure Gold!

Ok at the very least a giant inflatable version of Frank should appear on stage and accompany this song with bikini girls dancing around them... a spectacle to rival the Stonehenge moment in Spinal Tap. Brothers is out on May 18th. That is all.

Franks first big hit:
