Airline

Local thursday is back in full effect... Today we have Airline, from Dallas Tx Proper.... This band was recommended to me by Sharin, the most fabulous hair stylist in the world (you can reach her on myspace if you don't believe me and want to take the pepsi challenge. She will kick your hair stylist's ass.) Regardless, one of her clients is a member of this band and she turned me on to them... they can only be described as Space Pop... it's kind of a retro sound, yet not... kinda like Travis mixed with Fleetwood Mac. Great for Chill Beach Music so add it to your summer soundtrack . The debut album Farewell Republica is out now. Check it out.

Here's a taste.

Band of Skulls

Don't have time to write much... still preparing for bachelor party weekend. however, here is Boon's pick of Wednesday... Band of Skulls... A British band that is sort of White Stripes meets Franz Ferdinand type of band... I'd throw a little Duke Spirit in there too... due to a pretty strong female vocalist in Emma Richardson. The album is called Baby Darling Doll Faced Honey and here is a taste

Deer Tick

So I've beeen Going through Music for this weekend, which is a Bachelor party weekend... and in the midst of it all, out popped Deer Tick... not a parasite, but the band... Actually Gabe recommended they make the soundtrack, and I beleive that was an excellent choice... They are a Rhode Island band who have been described as folk Grunge... I think they have a more alt country feel...regardless they pretty much tore up SxSW this year... and will be at ACL to boot. Their new album Born on Flag Day will drop Jun 23.

Here's a taste.

Fight Bite

Welcome to another edition of Local Thursday on WTF. Today out of Denton, Texas we have Fight Bite... another one of those guy/girl (Leany and Jeff) duo bands.... very synth pop with haunting female vocals. I'm kinda pissed at myself I didn't post these guys sooner, but they came up on my playlist today to remind me. GVB also posted them earlier this week... I'm not copying, its purely coincidental... They are playing a show tomorrow presented by GVB with White Denim, Harlem, and the PVC Street Gang at Hailey's. Should be a fantastic show to say the least.

Anyways, Fight Bite are one of the up and comers out Denton... they have a sound reminicent of The Magnetic Fields meets a cool version of Enya. I believe the hip term for the genre is bedroom pop. Because obviously its sweet love making music... not the dirty rough kind as the band name suggests where you collapse in exhaustion possibly bleeding, but the sweet gentle kind where you cuddle afterward.

The name of the album is Emerald Eyes.

Here's a taste

Fight Bite - Swissex Lover

Fight Bite - Spring Rain

Boxer the Horse

Named after a character in Animal Farm and hailing from Charolottetown PEI ...that's canada... we have Boxer the Horse. Its Boon Pick Wednesday, and this is his Canadian Band de jour. Mmm... that sounds good... I'll have that.

Anyways, they've kinda got a folk tinged retro sixties sound... Much Like
Papercuts... Although Boxer the Horse sounds more like the Animals or the Loving Spoonful than the Zombies. Still its a good sound. The latest EP is Called The Late Show.

Here's your taste.

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukelele

From Taylor Mississippi we have Dent May & his Magnificent Ukulele ... a fabulous band name to begin with... when you use adjectives such as Magnificent you have quite the reputation to live up to... and in my opinion, the music can talk the talk even if there are no ukulele solos to speak of, the songs have a happy 60s vibe... maybe even french pop too... like The Cowsills meet Serge Gainsburg with a touch of Beach Boys. The Name of the album is The Good Feeling Music Of Dent May, And I have to say that's pretty spot on.

Cover Fridays - The day MY music died edition

You might have noticed there was no post on thursday... that's cause my music server died... at least I thought it died since it was making sounds like something was about to stop spinning, and
I couldn' t connect to it. It had me singing Don McLean American Pie which is about the real day the music died.. Feb 3, 1959... when Big Bopper, Richie Valens, and Buddy Holly had their plane crash.

Catch 22 - American Pie

Speaking of Crashing... back to the PC... I could have sworn the hard drive was going to crash. I have most everything backed up, but dude, I don't have the time for the BS.

MTE - Crash (Primitives Cover)

After a day of freaking out, turns out it was just the switch going bad. I still had internets, but couldn't connect to the PC. Turns out it was getting too hot. I let it cool down and its better for now.

Los Colorados - Hot & Cold (Katy Perry Cover)

Portugal, The Man Alaska's Finest

That's right... I said Alaska. You see today is normally a Boon day, but since he is in Alaska this week, he asked that I commemorate the occasion by posting an Alaskan Band. So, without further adieu, I give you Portugal, The Man. straight out of Wasilla, Alaska former mayoral stomping grounds of Sarah Palin, have a undoubtedly indie sound, bordering on mainstream.. think the verve meets oasis blended with mellow 70's Bowie-esque melodies with a dash of Polyphonic spree's quirkyness and a touch of bluesy soul for flavor. This song is from their album Censored Colors, however they have a new one dropping in July called The Satanic Satanist.

Angel Deradoorian / Dirty Projectors

So a couple of years ago, this Brooklyn band called Dirty Projectors caught my ear because they had decided to do a cover album. But not just any cover album.. a re-imagining of the Black Flag classic Damaged... the deal is they did it without listening to the album in 15 years... purely from memory. I was impressed. Well now, not only do we have a new Dirty Projectors album coming out in June called Bitte Orca, but as an extra added bonus we have Mind Raft... the new EP from Angel Deradoorian... one of the vocalists for the band. Good times. Doesn't Deradoorian have a little Natalie Portman meets Gina Gershon look to her?

Regardless. I can't really compare the music to anything, but I do have to say that the new singles for both the solo outing have a good chance of catching on.

Here we go.

Dirty Projectors - Stillness is the Move

Deradoorian - High Road

Papercuts

Papercuts
out of San Francisco is the name for the one man band that is Jason Quever with help from the likes of Alex Scally from Beach House and members of The Parish. Their sophomore album You Can Have What You Want was released on April 14... It's got a mix of the etherial hazy sound much like Beach House or Fleet Foxes mixed with the 60s groove of The Zombies.

Here's a taste.

Papercuts - Future Primitive

Covers Friday - John Hughes edition

So we were arguing exactly what makes a chick flick. I of course chose the stance that all teen movies are by definition not chick flicks, because their target audiences are teens. So who better to showcase today, than the master of the teen movie... Mr John Hughes.

From Pretty in Pink, the title track... originally by the Psychedelic Furs.

Dresden Dolls - Pretty in Pink

Oh look, another Molly Ringwald sighting... From the original teen stereotype movie, The Breakfast Club, a cover of the signature song orignially by Simple Minds

Son Lux Feat. Dayna Kurtz - (Don't You) Forget about me

From the movie that pretty much made we want to get a computer just so I could create a Lisa of my own, Weird Science. This is the title track originally by the king of movie soundtracks... Danny Elfman and his band Oingo Boingo

Hellogoodbye - Weird Science

These last two are the actual songs from the movies, but they were already covers. Stray Cats covered The Crests, and the Magnificient Wayne Newton covered Bert Kaempfert.

we've got $70 - and we got a pair of girl's underpants. We are safe as kittens, okay? From Sixteen Candles

Stray Cats - Sixteen Candles

I do have a test today, that wasn't bullshit. It's on European Socialism. I mean, really, what's the point? I'm not European. I don't plan on being European. So, who gives a crap if they're Socialists? They could be fascist anarchists, it still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car. From Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Wayne Newton - Danke Schoen

Bosque Brown

hello, and welcome to another installment of local thursday, where we here at WTF like to showcase some talent, born in Stephenville, and now calling Denton\Ft Worth home... Mara lee Miller, otherwise known as Bosque Brown. Although she's really a solo act, her band alter ego borders between indie folk and alt. country. They have a very Jolie Holland-esque sound if we are gonna make comparsions. And... they have a new album called Baby out. go buy it.

Whispertown 2000 aids the hearing of good music

Straight out of Los Angeles, California and led by an ex-child actor, Whispertown 2000 has that indie folk sound just sort of country that might seem out of place for LA, but when you find out that Morgan Nagler the lead vocalist and songwriter is buddy buddy with fellow ex child actors turned musicians, Blake Sennett and Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley, you can definitely see that they were all influenced by a common thread. and quite frankly its refreshing...even if she does like to sing off key every once in a while... she reminds me of a cross between Lucinda Williams and Zooey Deschanel with a touch of Cat Power. The backing vocals are nothing to be balked at either... Vanesa Corbala provides a nice dreaminess... and BTW, Jenny Lewis also appears on the latest album Swim along with Gillian Welch to provide backing vocals on "Atlantis" and perhaps some other tracks. Today I bring you "Done With Love" its just all around goodness.

Little Boots New in Town just another remix monday

I heard this song twice today, so I figured it was an omen that I must post much like its an omen that the Cowboy practice facilities collapsed... see now they don't have to worry about the team collapsing in December... but I digress... this post isn't about cowboys but it is about boots... this is about Little Boots... She's a electro pop princess from the UK who came on the scene last year with the very catchy hook of Stuck on Repeat... well her next single is New in Town, and its super catchy and its getting much remix love. Btw, I know Remix monday is not officially a day but dammit, each one of these has got its own little flavor. here's a taste.

Covers Friday - Let them eat CAKE edition

So I went to the cake concert last night... it was amazing... AND they gave away a persimmon tree. It would make sense if you were there.
Regardless CAKE from Sacramento California are no strangers to covers... They've covered Gloria Gaynor, Keith Whitley, Frank Sinatra, The Muppet, Kenny Rogers... you name it.. .they've done it, and most of the time done it better.

Here's a little taste.
covers of Black Sabbath, Barry White, and Bread

Cake - War Pigs

CAKE - Never Never Gonna Give You Up

CAKE - The Guitar Man

and I couldn't find an Mp3 for this, but Here is Kim Richey covering CAKE
