Heartless Bastards

Great name for a great band. I wish I would have thought of it. The Heartless Bastards are out of Cincy Ohio, and much like their Ohio brethren the Black Keys, they have quite a bluesy feel and a vaguely similar sound. However for their upcoming record The Mountain, which drops next week btw in case you want to go buy it, they also have a bit of an alt-country/southern rock feel. That could be because they recorded the album in Austin with the produer of ...Trail fo dead. They also recruited an austin local to play the steel guitar on the record. In fact, they've spent so much time in Austin, they are getting mistaken for an Austin based band by the local papers. But you got to give the credit to Cincy since they don't have much to root for over there. They have the Bengals for christ's sake! Here's the title track from the album.

Sometimes I hate people too, Neko

Sticking with my New Pornographers kick, a lovelier, less hairy member of the band also has a new album coming out soon. Neko Case 's new album Middle Cyclone comes out early March. If you don't know, I have a huge crush on Neko... She's a sexy fiery redhead who has an angelic voice... I remember seeing her at the Sons of Herman Hall in a crowd of about 15 people years back.... how times have changed... anyway I digress... her new song is called "People Got a lotta Nerve" and I totally agree with her sometimes... it's a little bit country, but closer to pornographers style I think....

Get Guilty with AC Newman

So yeah, probably the quietest of The New Pornographers, but still extremely talented, A.C. Newman has released his new album Get Guilty... It definitely has a pornographers vibe circa twin cinema... but it definitely has an AC Feel... not to mention he has some help from the Mates of State and Supergrass too. I don't know what song is the single, but I love this one.

Download:

AC Newman - Maybe Ten or Twelve

In other news involving guys that go by 2 initials, VH1 has green-lit a reality show with T.O. Now I know why the mayan calendar ends in 2012. Armageddon is closing in!

Covers Friday

That's right it's the inaugural edition of Covers Friday... I think I shouold probaby have a theme, but I really don't today... What I do have is goodness.. Just like Tony Romo vowed to be a better leader to the cowboys, i vow to you guys to come up with a nice lil theme...

Cut off your Hands is a new band from Aukland New Zealand, and they are a bit more serious than the Flight of the Conchords. Here they are covering The Witch by The Sonics... it worked for the Black Keys when they broke out with "Have Love, Will Travel". BTW, doesn't the opening riff remind you of Sublime?

Download:

Cut off your hands - The Witch (The Sonics)
Sublime - Date Rape

Speaking of Rockin... how about The Infadels... they kinda fell off my radar after the mini brit explosion of 2006 or so, but they still have a tight little sound. This is a great version of The Raconteurs "Steady as She Goes"

Download:
Infadels - Steady as She Goes (Raconteurs)

Want more rock covers? A few Months Adele, the sultry songstress from the UK did a live performance on the BBC. She busted out with "Last Nite" by the Strokes. I love the soulfulness.

Download:
Adele - Last Nite (Strokes)

And what is a covers day without a trip to the 80's. So we will have two 80's classices performed by different indie folk rock duos...

From the West Coast, we have Homesick Elephant doing their take on the Kenny Loggins' Top Gun Anthem "Danger Zone". Goose You big stud... take me to bed or lose me forever...

Download:
Homesick Elephant - Danger Zone (Kenny Mothereffin Loggins)

From the East Cost, we have The Rosebuds, getting down with a lil Salt N Pepa. "Push it" Real Good.

Top 130 of 2008 [10-1]

So this is it... the best of the best... ironically posted on oscar nominee day. It's actually possible for Brad and Angelina to win an oscar this year. I'm fairly certain that is a sign of the apocolypse.

009. Elbow - Grounds for Divorce - Such a great intro, great lyrics, great licks... this song is jsut great. These brit rockers have been around for a while, but they never had any song as good as this.

008. TV on the Radio =-Golden Age - It was a tossup between this song, and DLZ... such a great album. This song has a great 80's Michael Jackson Vibe for the intro... like back when he was still black.

007. Tilly and the Wall - Pot Kettle Black - Nebraska is more than just husker football... Guitar Riff that echos in your head for days, peircing femal vocals, and the percusion that sounds like armies marching, and a chorus that has a Le Tigre/Go team vibe... This song is just powerful.

006. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue - Fred Savage's love interest in "The Wizard", not to mention front woman for Rilo Kiley has a gorgeous voice, a skill for writing awesome songs, and no matter what style she uses, she's aluays manages to pull the listener in and sends you to a peacueful place.

005. Cold War Kids - I've Seen Enough - Its no secret I love this band, and there was a lot of good music... but this song stuck with me... maybe its the string section... or the haunting melody, or maybe cause its less in your face than "Something is not Right with me" while still being rocking.

004. Blitzen Trapper - Wild Mountain Nation - Holy Crap, did I just enter the 70's? This song sounds like it belongs in Almost Fanous... but I love it!
003. Tim Fite - Big Mistake - This song has such a great feel and great lyrics that everybody can relate to... it has a bit of a Clem Snide feel, but its layered a bit deeper than a straight acoustic feel.
002. Vampire Weekend - M79 - These guys were crowned the "it" band of the year before the year evein started.. but I think they lived up to their calling, with plenty of good songs on the new album. This one has a bit of a Paul Simon Feel, and I love the strings in the background.

001. MGMT - Weekend Wars - This song is fabulous... I love the intro with just the guitar and drums slowly building itn an electronic concerto reminicent of queen in a way. Very strong. As is the whole album. I wish I could have snuck even more songs on here

Top 130 of 2008 [34-19]

Wow we are getting down to the nitty gritty...
I think I can relate this post to Inauguration day as well... Lets see We have a new "Head honcho" "Ready for the Floor". We want to end this economic downturn created by the wicked "lenders in the Temple", and we "Salute your Solution" for the moment. Hopefully if you "Play Your Part" correctly, we won't look like "Fools" in the end and be forced to "Abandon" all hope.

On with the list...

034. Dodos - Fools
- Great album, and a catchy little song from what a little band from the West Coast that play what they call Psychadelic folk.

033. The Rosebuds - Life Like - Raleigh NC band, consisiting of married couples, like Mates of state and the Dears... this record was produced by Bon Iver. so you know its good.

032. Why? - The Holllows - Another west coast band.. they intrigue me... not all the songs sound the same, but they all are groovy... this one has a kind of Flobots "handlebars " vibe.

031. Mano Chao - The Bleedin Clown - The freaking opening of this song is just os in your face and catchy, it just pulls you in... It makes you listen. And clowns are evil so its good to see them bleed. Reminds me of the scene in Billy Madison.

030. The Racounteurs - Salute your Solution - Nashville's answer to shitty po country is back... not as good as the last album, but still fabulous. These guys can put on a show too...

029. Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor - do it do it do it do it do it now... this was destined to be sampled... Brit electronica pop that just infects your brain.

028. Conor Oberst - Lenders in the Temple - The kid is still brilliant... I don't care how hipster that makes me sound... awesome lyics, simple yet moving music.

027. Ida Maria - Oh My God - Norwegian awesomness.... I dunno kind of a Rilo Kiley vibe, but with more of a feist-like voice.

026. Girl Talk - Play your part(pt 1) - Another pure Genious.. Pittsburgh spinner, who does magical mashups. This is the first track, and I can't stop listening to it.

025. Rodney Crowell - I want you - The Houston Kid turned 58 this year, but he never stopped being relevant. Just a great sound, and always great lyrics

024. Cat Power - Song To Bobby - Awww, Thanks Chan for writing a song for me... what? It's written for Dylan?!?... dammit!.... Still a great song on a great album of covers. Lover her voice.

023. Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes - So many great songs from her... so many commericial uses... I don't care... I love the music

022. HoneyHoney - Little Toy Gun - Venice Ca - just a nice indie pop side, with a bit of blues and spanish guitar infused. Plus the name of the Album is called "First rodeo". That's just awesome.

021. French Kicks - Abandon - NYC band's album isn't glorious, but it has glimpses of greatness... the melodic harmonies and hypnotizing guitar riffs make this song awesome

020. DeVotchKa - Head Honcho - Denver finally decides its good for something and gives us this band, which i will describe as mariachi gypsy folk punk. It just sounds awesome. Maybe I'm just feeling my roots, but I will push this on everybody.

019. Flight of the Conchords - Ladies of the World - New Zealands best parody band, give us an album that sounds... pretty freaking amazing... these guys are great muscians...and this song

To be continued...

Top 130 of 2008 [50-35]

yay... we are in the top 50... exciting stuff. not like fishing people out of the hudson excitng, but still exciting. Now today's list has a bit of a country vibe, lots of southern bands and alt-country bands. Wasn't planned... just kinda happened. Don't worry pure indie goodness will be happening the next few days/

050. Eef Barzelay - Numerology - Eef from Jersey used to be in the alt country band Clem snide, which I was a big fan of... The musuc hasn't really changed. THis is nice mellow goodness.

049. The Beaches - WIKI WIKI - japanese indie pop... I don't know anything else about them except this song is super catchy. I like to imagine its a love song to wikipedia. It's jammin.

048. British Sea Power - Waving Flags - Hey remember these guys... this cd came out too early in the year, and it was good, Brit Indie Pop at its best.

047. The Felice Brothers - Frankie's Gun - I consider them an alt country band, even if they are from New York. The original version of this song was recorded in a chicken Coup. has a bit of a dylanesque sound.

046. Beck - Soul of A Man - I love beck. he still puts out great and interesting stuff... from the beginning
baseline it pulls you in.

045. Kings of Leon - Closer - Tennessee represents. The new album isn't as great as the last one but its still pretty good... love this song... has a spooky stalker vibe... I can see it in a movie.

044. The Band of Heathens - Jackson Station - Austin Tx band, has a very cool sound... kind of a blues country vibe.. and ol Ray Wyle Hubbard produced the album.

043. The Submarines - 1940 - I lover her voice... have for a while and I like the loungy sound...

042. The Weepies - Hideaway - indie folk pop... this song gets stuck in my head... it's like it belonged in the
90s. I like it though.

041. Albert Hammond Jr - GFC - The Strokes guitar player goes out on his own and makes a pretty good indie rock record, with a tinge of the blues. I likey.

040. The Roots - Birthday Girl - I'm currently making a "jailbait" playlist that I will share with you later.. This is definitely on it... and I hate to say it, but the hook vocals from Fall out Boy's Partrick Slump pretty much make the song... well that and the subject matter.

039. Drive By Truckers - Self Destructive Zones - Athens GA's second entry of the list. DBT are hit or miss on their songs, but this one is probably the best song off the new album.

038. My Morning Jacket - Touch Me I'm Going to Scream part 2 - Louiville Kentucky's alt-country jam bands new album was good from start to finish... this one stood out.

037. Duffy - Mercy - A departure from the southern sound... I heard this song every night at the bars in Batam indonesia, so it reminds be of partying and good times... plus what's not to love about her voice and the catchy rhythm?

036. Grand Ole Party - Look out Young Son - Reminds me of the gossip... southern california band is one to watch... plus the lead singer is also the drummer, which worked for cowboy mouth and genesis. This is a GREAT song.

035. Old 97's - Dance with me - Dallas Tx - Rhett Miller and the boys are back together, and they sound loads better... I think it did Rhett some good to record a solo album. I like this song... it has that happy tango song that I dig.

To be continued...

Top 130 of 2008 [66-51]

Oh we are so close to the top 50 I can taste it.. but first lets talk a bit about the cowboys... They kinda fit into this week list.. They are Rockstars, They've had their share of mistakes, They are America's Team, and the superbowl victory seems like a day that will never come. I think they need a Team Building retreat to improve their "chemistry"... Can't you see TO falling backwards, trusting Romo and Witten to catch him?

066. Steve Aoki - We Are Rockstars (ft Spank Rock Amanda Blank, and Does it offend you , yeah) - Great sound Great Remix. Btw, did you know Steve is Devon Aoki's Brother... one of the girls from D.E.B.S.

065. The Last Shadow Puppets - My Mistakes Were Made for you - Alex Turners side project offers stuff that is basically a more mellow version of the arctic monkeys

064. The Whigs - Mission Control - Athens GA band - good stuff, great hooks with a hint of southern sound.

063. Estelle (ft Kanye) - American Boy - I heard this a lot in singapore.. it stuck in my head.

062. Metallica - The Day that Never Comes - Back to the Days of One.

061. Be Your Own Pet - Becky - Nashville punk with a chick singer... but this song has a 50s vibe... and fun lyrics.

060. Bloc Party - Biko - The title of the new album is called intamacy, and this song as intimate as I've heard them... its like a soft melodic whisper in your ear building up to a sublte electronic beat

059. Jolie Holland - Mexico City - This is a really good song... I can see it making a movie sometime.. and it has a smidgeon of a mexican feel.

058. Coldpay - Violet Hill - you know how I know your gay... because you ranked Coldplay ahead of Metallica. yeah, I feel a little shame. But its the best track off la vida, and its catchy.

057. Men Without Pants - And the Girls Go - Great band name, Dan the automators newest project has a great toe tapping beat, and a catchy hook

056. Spiritualized - Soul on Fire - Mellow goodness. almost an alt-country feel, but with a poppy kind of orchestra behind them.

055. Bon Iver - For Emma - More Mellow goodness... just etherial sounding

054. What Made Milwaulkee Famous - REsistance St. - I wish these guys would get famous someday... they are really good.

053. The Ting Tings - That's not My Name - This is my happy song of the day.

052. N.E.R.D. - Everyone Nose (All the girls standing in the line for the bathroom) - I don't know why, but the minute I heard this song, I knew it would make my top list.

051. The Very Best (Esau Mwamwaya & RadioClit) - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwasssa (vampire weekend cover) - Ok this is a collabaration between african and brit pop doing a great Vampire weekend song. Sneaky I am... it's a really cool cover though

Top 130 of 2008 [82-67]

Assuming I don't meet my end early being blown up in a tragic fireworks accident, I hope to make it somewhere in the age range of 67-82.
I would like to say all these songs rock harder than your grandpa, but some of them are a little mellow. Oh well, enjoy the golden years of the list...

082. Melody Gardot - Goodnite - a girl from philly with a lounge jazz sound.
081. MC Chris - Hoodie Ninja - Whether or not he wants to admit it, mc chris is the father of nerdcore rap. This song makes me happy.

080. Magnetic Fields - Drive On, Driver - The magnetic fields have always had a particular quirky sound, and although nothing will ever match 69 love songs, there are a few tracks on this one that are great. I went with this one.

079. Dengue Fever - Sober Driver - Cambodian singing, crazy loungy sound... I always liked this band

078. The Mountains Goats and Kali King - Thank you Mario but the Princess is in another castle - I think the name of the song pretty much wreaks of awesomeness.

077. Gym Class Heroes - Blinded by the Sun - Did you know that the guy from GCH is dating Katy Perry? It's like the hipster version of Jay-Z and Beyonce.

076. The Panderers - Come On - Infectious little retro sound that sounds a little bit like a rockabilly version of Hank Williams "elijah"

075. Office - Dominoes - remind me of a rogue wave vibe... it's pretty happy too...

074. Clinic - Tomorrow - Boys from liverpool with a weird sound.. like the beatles during their Maharishi days maybe?

073. Uglysuit - Chicago - These boys from Oklahoma probably don't roll their joints all wrong, cause they managed to do something right... fusing alt-country with brit-pop to make... well this...

072. Calexico - Inspiracion - I love the little tango beat on this song, and Calexico trumpet melodies are always awesome... and on this track the trumpet player gets to sing! I only wish I knew who the girl was singing with him.

071. The Gaslight Anthem - Even Cowgirls get the Blues - Second coming of Springsteen? a good album altogether, I choice this track because I liked the Black-keysish guitar riff.

070. Beach House - Gila - This is just a great song. It sounds like it would be great in the sad part of a movie... when people are breaking up, or someoone is coping with a death. or maybe that's just the way I think.

069. Florence and the Machine - Kiss with a Fist - I immediately thought a poppy version of white stripes when I heard this song. I think I can get into her...

068. Kleerup - Until we Bleed (w Lykke Li) - More Swedeish Goodness... I'm a big fan of swedish bands.

067. Danny Elfman - The Little Things - This song surprised me... Elfman is known for doing soungtracks... Pee Wee, the Simpsons, anything Tim burton, and when he was in Oingo Boingo he did the Weird Science song... but this was totally unlike him.

Tomorrow is Friday. The Aggies beat Baylor. Life is good. To be continued...

098. Sons & Daughters - The Nest - Scottish Rockers and former members of Arab Strap.. .Like the sound and the vocals.

097. Voict - Two Devils - From the Netherlands... almost a polka background... but I like the sound.

096. Hayes Carll - She Left Me for Jesus - Houston country. He's a good songwriter.. this song was too funny not to share. I love it.

095. Tricky - Puppy Toy - That Bristol sound is back again.. one of the pionerrs of electronica comes back with a jazzy lounge sound.

094. Nicole Atkins - Maybe Tonight - East Coast gal that has a pretty voice and interesting melodies... but still a bit poppy

093. Miss Li - Don't try to fool me - Another Swede on my list with a interesting jazz pop sound and a bjork like voice.

092. A.A. Bondy - American Hearts - Saw him open for CWK at Lola's in Ft Worth... great acoustic sound, and a good songwriter from 'Bama.

091. Okkervil River - Lost Coastlines - Austin Indie Folk with a knack for having at least one standout song on a good album.. this is it.

090. Mike Patton - Perfect Twist - I'm pretty sure the ex Faith No More singer has gone totally mad... his music keeps getting weirder and weirder, but every once in a while he has another good nugget.

089. Nick Cave & Te Bad Seeds - Jesus on the Moon - I like the CD, and had a hard time deciding which song would represent it... I went with Jesus.

088. Santogold ft Pharrel Williams and Julian Casablancas - My Drive Thru - Yeah so she sold out to bud light, and Pharell.. it's still good stuff.

087. Ben Folds (w Regina Spector) - You don't know me - My happy song of the day.

086. Little Jackie - I believe that that the world should revolve around me - Totally fun song... I don't know if anybody remembers the song legend of a cowgirl from back in 97("Pack my Bags and Mount my horse, I'm gonna ride on into the next town...") well she has a new band and this is it.

085. She and Him - Why Do you let me stay here? - mmmmm zoey. She's so awesome. I love her voice. I like her songwriting. I love her.

084. Sigur Ros - Gobbledigook - Icelandic guys with their own little language that they made up... the songs always sound good, but I'd still want to be able to understand lyrics one of these days.

083. Dears - Crisis 1&2 - Canadian band... the last album lacked a little... this one is better, and this song is more of a minimalistitic pop song that still manage to sound complex.

To be continued...

Top 130 of 2008 [114-99]

Yeah I know what you are thinking.. what kind of weirdo counts down
by 16... well I don't do anything normal, and I'm a computer guy so
I think in 16 bits. On with the list

114. Johnny Dowd - Judgement Day - Ft Worth Born country artists who plays what I can only describe as goth country... like it belongs
on True Blood.

113. Jackie Green - I don't live in a dream - A little poppy, a little cheezy, a little Ray Lamontagney... but i still like it.

112. Justin Townes Earle - Lone Pine Hill - Son of Steve, named after Townes Van Sandt.. he's got some pressure... luckily he sounds good in an old timey country kinda way.

111. The Cool Kids - One Two - Hipster rappers from chicago claim to be the black beastie
boys in this song. That is just weird.

110. I'm from Barcelona - Headphones - Happy song from Happy swedes. The swedes have good music I think.

109. Empire of the Sun - We Are the People - I think they are Aussies... but its your standard brit rock.

107. Mates of State - My Only Offer - Kansas couple offers up indie pop that sounds great, though not as good as their previous offerings.

106. Horrorpops - Disco - Danish band that is on the verge of being punkabilly. Nice fun sound and lyrics.

105. Black Kids - I'm not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with you - Probably the best thing the Black Kids will ever do. they have one hit wonder written all over them.

104. Caesars - Crystal - Forget the fact that Ipod overexposed them on their last album... this is good stuff.

103. The Kooks - Kids (MGMT cover) - Was gonna put "shine on" on the list, but it got overexposed in commercials. so I decided to let them support MGMT.

102. Two Sheds - You - cute song. The lead singer Amber has a nice voice. Can see this in a romantic comedy some day staring Ryan Reynolds.

101. I love Math - Only Clowns are Scary - Dallas based band featuring members of the Old 97s, Deathray Davies, The Paper Chase and Apples in Stereo, yet the music kinda just melds in betweeen everyones style and just sounds like indie pop.

099. Mr Lewis and the Funeral 5 - My Girl,Suicide - Austin band.. Mr Lewis offers up a unique blend of a dark yet happy beat, with a bit of tango and hawaiian music infused... yeah you just have to hear it. It's kinda like the gypsy punk of gogol bordello. Who I love.
