Local thursday is back in full effect... Today we have Airline, from Dallas Tx Proper.... This band was recommended to me by Sharin, the most fabulous hair stylist in the world (you can reach her on myspace if you don't believe me and want to take the pepsi challenge. She will kick your hair stylist's ass.) Regardless, one of her clients is a member of this band and she turned me on to them... they can only be described as Space Pop... it's kind of a retro sound, yet not... kinda like Travis mixed with Fleetwood Mac. Great for Chill Beach Music so add it to your summer soundtrack . The debut album Farewell Republica is out now. Check it out.
Here's a taste.
Airline - Evil Livia
Don't have time to write much... still preparing for bachelor party weekend. however, here is Boon's pick of Wednesday... Band of Skulls... A British band that is sort of White Stripes meets
Franz Ferdinand type of band... I'd throw a little Duke Spirit in there too... due to a pretty strong female vocalist in Emma Richardson. The album is called Baby Darling Doll Faced Honey and here is a taste
Band of Skulls - I know what I am
So I've beeen Going through Music for this weekend, which is a Bachelor party weekend... and in the midst of it all, out popped Deer Tick... not a parasite, but the band... Actually Gabe recommended they make the soundtrack, and I beleive that was an excellent choice... They are a Rhode Island band who have been described as folk Grunge... I think they have a more alt country feel...regardless they pretty much tore up SxSW this year... and will be at ACL to boot. Their new album Born on Flag Day will drop Jun 23.
Here's a taste.
Deer Tick - Easy
Welcome to another edition of Local Thursday on WTF. Today out of Denton, Texas we have Fight Bite... another one of those guy/girl (Leany and Jeff) duo bands.... very synth pop with haunting female vocals. I'm kinda pissed at myself I didn't post these guys sooner, but they came up on my playlist today to remind me. GVB also posted them earlier this week... I'm not copying, its purely coincidental... They are playing a show tomorrow presented by GVB with White Denim, Harlem, and the PVC Street Gang at Hailey's. Should be a fantastic show to say the least.
Anyways, Fight Bite are one of the up and comers out Denton... they have a sound reminicent of The Magnetic Fields meets a cool version of Enya. I believe the hip term for the genre is bedroom pop. Because obviously its sweet love making music... not the dirty rough kind as the band name suggests where you collapse in exhaustion possibly bleeding, but the sweet gentle kind where you cuddle afterward.
The name of the album is Emerald Eyes.
Here's a taste
Fight Bite - Swissex Lover
Fight Bite - Spring Rain
Named after a character in Animal Farm and hailing from Charolottetown PEI ...that's canada... we have Boxer the Horse. Its Boon Pick Wednesday, and this is his Canadian Band de jour. Mmm... that sounds good... I'll have that.
Anyways, they've kinda got a folk tinged retro sixties sound... Much Like Papercuts... Although Boxer the Horse sounds more like the Animals or the Loving Spoonful than the Zombies. Still its a good sound. The latest EP is Called The Late Show.
Here's your taste.
Boxer the Horse - Lenny Was a Moonshiner
From Taylor Mississippi we have Dent May & his Magnificent Ukulele ... a fabulous band name to begin with... when you use adjectives such as Magnificent you have quite the reputation to live up to... and in my opinion, the music can talk the talk even if there are no ukulele solos to speak of, the songs have a happy 60s vibe... maybe even french pop too... like The Cowsills meet Serge Gainsburg with a touch of Beach Boys. The Name of the album is The Good Feeling Music Of Dent May, And I have to say that's pretty spot on.
Dent May - Meet me in the Garden
You might have noticed there was no post on thursday... that's cause my music server died... at least I thought it died since it was making sounds like something was about to stop spinning, and
I couldn' t connect to it. It had me singing Don McLean American Pie which is about the real day the music died.. Feb 3, 1959... when Big Bopper, Richie Valens, and Buddy Holly had their plane crash.
Catch 22 - American Pie
Speaking of Crashing... back to the PC... I could have sworn the hard drive was going to crash. I have most everything backed up, but dude, I don't have the time for the BS.
MTE - Crash (Primitives Cover)
After a day of freaking out, turns out it was just the switch going bad. I still had internets, but couldn't connect to the PC. Turns out it was getting too hot. I let it cool down and its better for now.
Los Colorados - Hot & Cold (Katy Perry Cover)
